1. Hotel La Pietra di Luna – Maiori, Italy (on Amalfi Coast)
Best for: Amalfi Coast views and relaxed seaside stays and affordable prices
Hotel La Pietra di Luna is a classic Amalfi Coast favorite, perfectly positioned just steps from Maiori’s beachfront. The hotel offers stunning sea views, particularly from its higher-floor rooms and terrace, making it an ideal choice for travelers who want to wake up to the Mediterranean.
Rooms are spacious, bright, and traditionally styled, with balconies that invite long, quiet evenings overlooking the coast. The breakfast is generous and varied, featuring Italian pastries, fresh fruit, and good coffee served to the table. This hotel has a bit of old-school feel with the staff changing their outfits to suit every serving. Our partial seaview was wonderful and we enjoyed a cool drink on our balcony in the afternoon.
What truly sets this hotel apart is its easygoing atmosphere. It provides a more relaxed and authentic Amalfi experience compared to busier towns like Positano, while still being well-connected by ferry and bus. A solid choice for couples and travelers who value location and calm over luxury flash. There is a bus stop very close, the hotel has its own little beach area and the pool is excellent. The main street is nearby with restaurants and couple of gelaterias so you can easily find places to dine and have a dessert. We paid about 150 € per night here with Hotels.com. 2. Hotel Benalma Costa del Sol – Spain
Best for: Beachfront relaxation with modern resort vibes
Hotel Benalma delivers exactly what many travelers dream of on the Costa del Sol: sun, sea, and effortless comfort. Sitting right on the beachfront near Benalmádena, the hotel combines contemporary design with a laid-back resort atmosphere.

During peak-season it might be crowded and loud at the bigger pool, but you can enjoy the party atmosphere and energetic dancing in the pool. 3. Clarion Hotel Helsinki – Jätkäsaari, Finland
Best for: Design lovers and modern city views
Clarion Hotel Helsinki is a standout in the city’s hotel scene, offering Scandinavian design, comfort, and striking views over the harbor. Located in the developing Jätkäsaari district, it provides a quieter base while still being well connected to the city center by tram.
Rooms are sleek, minimalist, and soundproofed, designed with comfort and functionality in mind. The real highlight is the rooftop pool and sky bar, which offer panoramic views—especially impressive during sunset or on clear winter days.
However, the pool is only warm during the summer months. (Tried it in October and it was freezing cold!) The saunas with the views are still fabulous.
The breakfast is excellent, with high-quality Nordic ingredients and plenty of healthy options. Clarion Helsinki is ideal for business travelers, couples, and anyone who appreciates modern architecture and calm design without sacrificing convenience. 4. Miglio D’Oro Park Hotel – Ercolano, Italy (near Naples)
Best for: Historic charm near Pompeii and Herculaneum
Set within the former Golden Mile of Ercolano, Miglio D’Oro Park Hotel feels more like a historic villa than a typical hotel. Surrounded by a peaceful park and gardens, the hotel offers a refined escape just minutes from the ruins of Herculaneum and a short drive from Pompeii.

Some Extras for the Road
These five four‑star hotels show how varied and rewarding mid‑range European travel can be—from seaside escapes and historic villas to cutting‑edge Nordic design and city-center classics. Each offers excellent value when matched with the right travel style. I have couple of favorite resorts that I want to mention here too, because they have stolen my heart with their facilities and views:
The wonderful Holiday Club Katinkulta in Vuokatti, Finland and Holiday Club Åre in Sweden. They both have more or less four-star facilities and the best thing about both of them are the spas in both sites. In Åre also, ask for a room with the lake view, because it is absolutely beautiful with the foggy mountains behind the placid lake.
They both have ample breakfasts and in Åre the rooms are very cottage-like with wooden panels and furniture, of course because it is mainly a ski-resort during winter. Katinkulta has lots of fully equipped cabins to rent if you do not wish to stay at the main building.
