New York City—the city that never sleeps—is a dream destination for travelers worldwide. Its energy is tangible, its skyline is iconic, and its streets are overflowing with culture and history. But what if you only have one day to experience it all? I have crafted the ultimate itinerary to help you explore the best of NYC in just 24 hours.
1. Green Escapes
Heading for the Central Park for a lovely stroll and perhaps some packed lunch?
To start with our travel tips and top 5 places to see in New York, let’s start with accommodation first. We stayed at a hotel outside of Manhattan, because the prices were sky high at the time of booking. I ended up booking a 3-star Hilton Garden Inn Ridgefield Park on Hotels.com at around 160 euros. We were very happy with our choice. It had two queen-sized beds to fit our family of four. It also had free parking and breakfast of around 10 dollars each with fresh bagels.
After having breakfast, you can start your day by just relaxing in the beautiful Central park. You will see lots of people jogging, having packed lunch, and walking around. You can witness kids playing and people sitting on the lawns and benches on a good day. This urban oasis offers winding paths, serene lakes, horse carriages and iconic spots like Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge. If you are feeling adventurous, rent a bike for a quick circle. The park stretches 4 km in length and 1 km in width.
2. Times Square
In the beating heart of Manhattan, Times Square offers a sensory overload. It is full of flashing billboards, crowds of tourists, and street performers. Grab a coffee at our family’s favourite donut shop. Krispy Kreme’s is on the corner. Take a few minutes to marvel at the energy. Make sure you take a lot of pictures. Also, check out our short video on our Instagram from the Square.

There are a lot of shops around Times Square. I would leave them for later if you are lacking time. This way, you can check out the main sites on foot. As I have mentioned before, make sure you have comfy trainers. With mine it is like walking on clouds and I can walk with them all day without getting achy feet. Trust me on this one!
Art and Architecture
3. Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)
Next, immerse yourself in creativity at MoMA. Even if you only have an hour, you’ll see masterpieces by Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol. The museum’s modern design is stunning. Its world-class collection makes it a must for art lovers. It is definitely one of the top 5 places to see in New York.
4. Rockefeller Center or the Empire State Building
Just a short walk away, Rockefeller Center awaits.

Head up to the Top of the Rock observation deck for sweeping views of Manhattan. You can also enjoy some ice skating. Perhaps you do not get to ice skate as much as us Finns.
This vantage point differs from the Empire State Building. It gives you a perfect shot of the skyline with Central Park in the frame. However, both of these are worth at least ogling at from the street level. Going up can be pricey. It depends on your budget.
5. Grand Central Station
As you may have seen in the films, this railway station is iconic and beautiful.

It features a clock in the center and a beautiful high ceiling. Bustling crowds add to the charm. The station was originally built in 1871 and still has not lost its beauty.
Extras, if you have time
Brooklyn Bridge, The Bull, The World Trade Center Memorial and of course the Statue of Liberty
As the day winds down, make your way to the Brooklyn Bridge. Walking across this historic landmark at sunset is pure magic. The Manhattan skyline glows in golden light. It is a sight you’ll never forget. If you want you can also pay your respects at the World Trade Centre Memorial and Museum.

If you have time, you should visit the famous bronze statue of a Charging Bull. It symbolizes the finance sector. Nearby, you can walk to the Battery Park. Go to the lookout point to see the Statue of Liberty from a distance. If you want to get up close with the statue, you should take one of the cruises.
Pro Tips for Your NYC Day
- Start early: Mornings are less crowded and perfect for sightseeing.
- Wear comfy shoes: You will be walking a lot! I am not going to recommend using the subway, as I am not sure of its safety and we did not use it on our visit. Always of course look after your belongings in the crowds.
- Plan ahead: Book tickets for MoMA and Top of the Rock online to save time.
Final Thoughts
One day in New York City is short. However, with this itinerary, you will experience the essence of the Big Apple. You will see dazzling lights, serene parks, world-class art, and unforgettable views. I think NYC left us wanting to visit it again. All the sounds with horns and sirens blaring and workers drilling felt familiar from the movies. In a way it felt like we had been there before, but there are still plenty to see and experience on our next visit.
