Philadelphia is a city where history and culture collide in the most vibrant way. I actually did not know much about the city beforehand, other than from movies and the song by Bruce Springsteen. Known as the birthplace of American independence, it’s also a place of iconic food, sports passion, and cinematic fame. If you’re visiting for the first time, you will quickly discover that Philly offers a perfect blend of historic landmarks, local flavors, and modern entertainment. Here is how you can spend an unforgettable day exploring the city, from the Liberty Bell to cheering on the Philadelphia Flyers.
Morning: The Liberty Bell and Independence Center
We were actually quite lucky with the day we chose to visit Philly. There was a huge parade of The U.S. Marine Corps celebrating their 250th Anniversary.
Despite the drizzling light rain the visit was unforgettable. No trip to Philadelphia is complete without starting at the Liberty Bell, one of the most lasting symbols of freedom in the United States.
Behind the glass in the Liberty Bell Center, this cracked yet powerful relic draws visitors from around the world. As you stand before it, you’ll notice the inscription: “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof.” These words, taken from the Bible’s Book of Leviticus, became a rallying cry for abolitionists and civil rights leaders, reminding us that liberty is a universal aspiration.
On the other side of the street from the Liberty Bell is the Independence Visitor Center, where you can immerse yourself in the city’s revolutionary past. This iconic sandwich, made with thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and a soft hoagie roll, is a culinary symbol of the city. Although I am sure there are amazing spots for a cheesesteak such as Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks as the most famous rivals, located across the street from each other in South Philly but the kids were getting hungry so we went for the Primo Hoagies on Market Street and loved it! I only took the smallest one but still it was very filling.
Whichever you choose, don’t forget to order like a local: specify your cheese preference (Cheez Whiz, provolone, or American) and whether you want onions (“wit” or “without”).
Afternoon: Rocky Steps and Statue
With your hunger satisfied, it’s time to channel your inner champion at the Rocky Steps. Located at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, these 72 steps became legendary thanks to Sylvester Stallone’s training montage in the 1976 film Rocky. Running up the steps has become a rite of passage for visitors, symbolizing perseverance and triumph. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a sweeping view of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, lined with flags from around the world.
Don’t miss the Rocky statue, situated normally at the base of the steps.
This time it was actually on top of the steps. Originally created for Rocky III, the bronze statue has become a beloved landmark, with tourists lining up to snap photos alongside the fictional boxing hero. Evening: Ice Hockey and the Philadelphia Flyers

Also having three Finnish players on the opposite side (Florida Panthers), was exciting, too see how they hold against the mighty Flyers.
